Eating Disorders

I've never really paid attention to eating disorders, but it's time to weigh the facts: it is estimated that 70 million individuals worldwide are impacted by eating disorders, with 24 million being American.  Eating disorders are very dangerous and painful- both physically and emotionally.  In general, people with eating disorders see themselves through a distorted lens- they see themselves as unattractive and "fat", when in reality, they could be the exact opposite.  For many, it is a cycle of binging and purging, in a stretch for control in their life.  Food is necessary for a healthy life, and without it, the body deteriorates.  Without treatment, at least 50,000 individuals will die.  Don't think of eating disorders as a losing battle, though.  There are groups and organizations devoted to helping people with eating disorders.  Stephanie Armstrong is one example of a survivor.  She found the strength to reach out, however tentatively, and she was saved.  Organizations like the National Eating Disorders Association made it their mission to help people like Stephanie who are struggling with their disorder.  There is more information on eating disorders, along with success stories on their website.
